In-jokes

The designers tongue had me laughing out loud. From the 'approval of Steve Jobs' to the 'comic sans rejection buds'. Great fun from Core 77. Click to enlarge.

For budding directors...

For budding directors and advertising people everywhere. The Storyboard book. So clever. Seen at DC.

A new decade.

It's hard to know where to start. It has been a while since I put anything of real 'substance' on this blog. And by substance I mean a post with more than ten words to it.

I've been kinda preoccupied - hence the sporadic, sparse posting. The last few months have been busy, busy, busy. I've mainly been busy making changes. After almost 5 years I've resigned from my job. (Five years is an absolute age in advertising years - creatives seem to hop, skip and jump agencies with knicker changing frequency in this industry.)

I've decided it's time for something new.

The new year - and new decade - will bring a fresh start for me. I'll still be doing advertising and design, but in vastly different environment. The new year will also bring fresh challenges in other avenues and exciting things to share as time progresses. That's the plan, anyway.

What ever the next 365 holds for you, I hope it's great.

The Chocolate Club.

I'm doing some work for this client. Rebranding and packaging ideas that I'll share once the client has approved them. It's a really elegant concept for the connoisseur - a different selection of handmade chocolates sent to you monthly. Here is how to join.

Sad ad land.

Acerbic stuff. More here.

Lights, camera...

I had a chance to work with a talented team of people last week. One of the cool things about working in this business is seeing an idea come to life. What was just a sketch last week was carefully transformed into reality. Every make up brush-stroke, set adjustment, lighting check, garment choice, model pose and final 'click' of the camera shutter contributing to the end result.
I can't show you the finished product - but the above are some great images from the porfolios of the team I worked with.

SOS campaign update

We've had a great response from all who came into contact with our Save Our Seas campaign.
Last Sunday, day 3 of our ambient campaign, the third piece appeared on the beach. A coffin. It held a plaque with a really sobering statistic about the dire state of our marine life.

See here for a movie overview of our campaign.

Save Our Seas - The ocean speaks out

A campaign I've been working on for a while launched yesterday. It's for Save Our Seas - a non profit organisation who work to preserve our marine creatures and their environment.

To educate the public about the fast decline of oceanic life, we came up with the idea of giving the ocean and its inhabitants a voice.

If walking along Muizenberg beach in Cape Town yesterday you would have come across a sea shell that actually spoke. Fitted with a mini speaker device the shell holds a recording that speaks of the ocean's plight from the point of view of the sea.

This morning, beach goers discovered messages in bottles that had appeared to have washed ashore. Inside the weathered bottles were handwritten letters - personal calls for help from different sea creatures like Shawn the Prawn or Greg the Great White Shark.

In this way we communicate the threats that the ocean faces in a very personal tone of voice. It's a personal SOS from the sea.

Bottles on the beach this morning before they were discovered.

I was fortunate to have involvement from some fantastic, internationally-renowned illustrators in crafting the letters for this campaign. With their skills they added life and personality to our messages, allowing them to take on the character of the various sea creatures who penned the letters.

The final stage of this ambient campaign will play out tomorrow morning. I'll post a follow up about that. Also on Muizenberg beach this final statement is a sobering reminder that speaks to the fact that if we as humans don't drastically change our behaviour towards the ocean, there will simply be no life left in it. No more fish and chips. No more Nemo.

Portfolio on Behance.

You must have checked out the Behance Network? A great online portfolio site. I've decided to upload some work to it. Beginning here. DH got me onto it. Some of his work here. Oh, and more of my stuff with my writer on her page. Only problem is what to do while it's uploading... takes ages on our bandwith. Btw, married surname if anyone is confused.

New banner - Earth hour

I've added the 'Earth hour' banner to this blog for the next month. The 2009 campaign has been produced by our agency and aims to unite people against climate change. By signing up and committing to switching off your lights for an hour on the 28th of March you have the power to make real change. It will mean the world.

A magical setting.

The Two Oceans Aquarium is a client of ours. They recently opened a new exhibit: 'Frogs beyond the pond' and we produced the above ad for them. A play on the princess and the frog. We really should be kissing frogs - they are the canary in the coal mine. Particularly sensitive creatures to any change in environmental conditions they act as major indicators that the ecosystem is in real trouble. And sadly an alarming percentage have already become extinct.

Kelp forest, Two Oceans Aquarium.

In thanks for the work done on the campaign I was kindly given a table for dinner at the Aquarium last eve. As a Valentines promotion they transformed the area into a restaurant and dotted tables in amongst the amazing exhibits. DH and I were seated in front of the mesmerising kelp forest. A most memorable Valentine dinner experience in a magical setting. I hope your day was as lovely.

9 - 5

I was surprised to see some of my work published in the above book, BLADE, while randomly paging through books in the design section of Exclusive Books. Checked out their site only to see it hadn't been properly credited. Will see if I get a response to my email.

Other work news is that a campaign I was involved in a few years ago has just won a 'Panda' at the Wildscreen Film festival. Apparently the equivalent of an Oscar in wildlife circles... See the ads here.

Coverage

Although this campaign never saw the light of day it is getting a little coverage on some blogs. The idea for the advertising was that we wanted to revist the tactile nature and joy of reading the newspaper (as opposed to perhaps getting your news on line) and illustrate this by showing the news 'coming alive'. Executed by paper cutting the actual newspaper. It's work that I'm really proud of and was so disapointed the client never agreed to run the campaign.

I've included scamps of the initial idea and then the finished product beautifully executed by Heather of Skinny Laminx. It was equally lovely working with you Heather - I'll have to come up with another paper cutting idea so that we can make use of your considerable talent with the knife! Unfortunately the reality of this business is that some ideas never make it out there...

I heard this ad man speak at the Eagles breakfast on monday morning.
He has an amusing book out: One-Track Mind. ...blogging from work...shh

Launched - Not as sweet as you think

Some of our latest ads are in magazines at the moment. An Archers Aqua job shot by Jillian Lochner. I think the work turned out nicely and the prizes for the competition are fabulous - how about a trip to Paris...? Check out the web component for the competition and more images here.

Very cool styling by Kate Rush.

Natasha Lawes

I was introduced to Luna and Curious via the lovely Freshly Found. That in turn led me to Designers Block and the work of Natasha Lawes.  (Don't you just love following link upon link, thanks Denise for this great find!)
So above are some of my favourite images from the portfolio of yet another amazingly talented creative person. Must admit some of her stuff a bit too gory for me but I can certainaly appreciate the time and effort that this type of hair, wardrobe styling and make up must take!
